The power of praise is a recurring theme in Scripture, and it has profound spiritual, emotional, and even physical impacts on those who practice it. Praise is not just an expression of gratitude or admiration for God; it is also a tool that strengthens faith, aligns our hearts with God's will, and brings spiritual breakthroughs.
Praise is not magic, and some of the realities of praise, as seen below, may not be offered to us as God has something greater for us to learn or experience. But we can praise with Holy expectation. Genuine praise results from a heart bowed low before God more than a hand lifted up. Here's a deeper look at what Scripture teaches about the power of praise and what it does for us:
1. Praise Invites God's Presence – "Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. (Psalm 22:3)
2. Praise Quells Pride as it Boasts in God – "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord." (Psalm 34:1-2)
3. Praise Can Break Chains and Bring Deliverance – "About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly, there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose." (Acts 16:25-26)
4. Praise Affirms the Strength and Protection of God – "The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him." (Psalm 28:7)
5. Praise Can Confuse and Defeat the Enemy – "And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed." (II Chronicles 20:22)
6. Praise Replaces Anxiousness with Peace – "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)
7. Praise Reminds us of God's Blessings – "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's." (Psalm 103:2-5)
8. Praise is an Act of Obedience and Worship – "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name." (Hebrews 13:15)
Praise has incredible practical benefits that can transform our lives. It lifts our mental health by focusing our thoughts on God, helping to reduce anxiety and foster gratitude. It also unites us with others, strengthening the Body of Christ as we worship together. Praise empowers us, energizing our spirits and giving us the confidence to face life's challenges, knowing God's power is at work in us.
To incorporate praise into your daily life, consider setting aside time for worship, keeping a gratitude journal to note reasons to praise, joining others in corporate worship, and choosing to praise God even during trials as an act of faith. By making praise a habit, you'll experience the peace, strength, and unity that come from honoring God.
